Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of all the seven Canary Islands and is one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain, and rightfully so. With incredible topography, including the third largest volcano in the world, and a cultural base including sculpture, museums, and more, and miles of beaches it's easy to see why. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and Teide National Park, a World Heritage site, is in the center of the island. Also to be discovered is the Macizo de Anaga which has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and had the largest number of endemic species in the world.

Another attraction is the 40-plus miles of beaches and some of the largest lava tubes in the world, both worth exploring. Among the many existing volcanic tubes on the island stands out the Cueva del Vienta, which is located in the northern town of Icod de los Vinow, the largest volcanic tunnel in Europe and one of the largest in the world, although for a long time was even considered the largest in the world.

Tenerife is known internationally as the "Island of Eternal Spring and enjoys a warm tropical climate with an average of 18-24 C (64-75 F) in the winter and 24-28 C (75-82 F) in the summer. It has a high annual total of days of sunshine, and low precipitation in all but the mountain areas.

In the lush and green north of the island, the main development for tourism has been in the town of Puerto de la Cruz. The town itself has kept some of its old-harbor charm mixed with northern European influences. Still, the tourist boom in the 1960s changed the outlook of the town, making it cozy and cosmopolitan at the same time, and a favorite for the more mature traveler (notably the German and Spanish tourists). Also, the botanical gardens, archaeological sites, cultural museums, art, architecture, music, and the surrounding beauty is what attract so many visitors to the island.
