Get away from the crowded ship excursions of other Mayan ruins.
No need to take the free shuttle from the pier into Progreso to meet your excursion since your private guide and air-conditioned transportation will be waiting just outside the Progreso cruise terminal to begin your exploration of the famous ruins of Uxmal. Uxmal is comparable to the Chichen-Itza Mayan ruins; however, they are much less crowded but equally impressive.
Located about 50 miles from Merida City, your travel time will be approximately 1.5 hours. Along the route, your guide will be giving you an informative and educational insight to the Mayan civilization, Uxmal ruins, and the Yucatan area. Uxmal pronounced Ush-Mal, is considered to be one of the most representatives of the region's Mayan architectural style and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Upon arriving at Uxmal, your guide will show you some of the many buildings that are noted for their decoration, size, and state of preservation. You will see the "sac-be's", the ancient roads made from white crushed stone that connect the buildings on site and lead out to some of the other Mayan cities in the area. See some of the famous structures with intricately carved facades, plazas, and pyramids on the grounds.
See the Pyramid of the Dwarf, noted in author John Stephens' book "Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan". According to Stephens, the pyramid was magically constructed overnight by a dwarf as a challenge issued by the governor/ruler of Uxmal. The pyramid is also known as the Pyramid of the Magician and has 5 levels.
Some of the other structures include the Governor's Palace covering over 13,000 square feet, the Ball Court, the House of the Turtles, the Nun's Quadrangle, and many more. Adding to the mystery of Uxmal, you will learn that during the site's inauguration, the sound system started playing the Mayan prayer to Chaac, the Mayan rain god when a sudden torrential downpour opened up out of a totally clear sky.
Your private Uxmal cruise excursion guide and transportation will take you back to the Progreso cruise ship pier at the end of the excursion.
