Come get away from the crowded cruise ship excursions and explore the ruins, Merida City, and more! For this excursion, it's a short 5 to 10 minutes walk to meet your friendly guide at the end of the duty-free shops. Once you meet your guide and are comfortably onboard the air-conditioned transportation your day of exploring and sightseeing will begin.
As you head out to the Mayan Ruins, your guide will go over the plan for the day and share some information and a little history of the Mayan culture. If you have any questions, be sure to have them ready and your cameras handy. Once you arrive at Dzibilchaltun and get checked in, you will head out to explore the structures and learn more about the Mayan culture.
Dzibilchaltun, pronounced "d-zeeble-chal-toon", are ruins situated just south of Progreso. The impressive ruins are lesser-known than Chacchoben, hence there are fewer crowds! One of the most famous structures is the Temple of the Seven Dolls. It was given this name for the seven small dolls found when archaeologists discovered the ruins in the 1950s. One of the unique features of the Temple is the position in which the Mayans constructed the building. The Temple is situated so that on the day of the Spring Equinox, the sun rises and shines directly through one temple window and out the other.
After exploring the ruins, it's time to head to the " White City of Merida". With its unique architecture, you will discover places like Paseo de Montejo, Teatro Peon Contreras, La Cathedral de San Idelfonso, Casa Montejo, and Plaza Grande, just to mention a few places. You will also visit the biggest local crafts and Bazar market where you can browse the lovely handcraft open-air market and shop for the perfect, one-of-a-kind souvenir.
After sightseeing the White City, it's time for a beach break at Vistamar Beach Club. As you arrive at the beach club, the friendly staff with greet you with a welcome drink and a snack. The club has all you need, such as lounge chairs, a freshwater swimming pool, hammocks, a secluded beach, free internet, and more to make relax. There is also a restaurant where you are able to purchase food and drinks, at your own expense.
After your adventurous day comes to an end, your guide will take you back to your Progreso cruise ship pier. Please consider this excursion requires a minimum of 4 people to run.
Explore the Mayan Ruins, discover the City of Merida, and relax at the Vistamar Beach Club! You will not want to miss out on this great combo shore excursion when in Progreso!
