Your adventurous day begins as you meet your guide outside your Naples Cruise Terminal. Hop onboard your comfortable, air-conditioned transportation and get ready for a Naples shore excursion day to remember.
Pompeii is your first stop of the day, where you will have 2 hours of free time to explore. Today Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the majority of it was destroyed in 79 AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying it in volcanic ash! To this day Pompeii remains one of the most significant proofs of ancient Roman civilization, just like an open book, it provides excellent information on the customs, trades, and arts of their everyday life.
Up next, you will head to Herculaneum, a town that was named after Hercules. Smaller than Pompeii, the city was buried beneath 16 meters of ash and mud by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This layer helped preserve two-story domus homes leaving their internal architecture and decor intact. Today you can marvel at the wood features and marble, decorations, jewelry, and even organic remains such as food because of this layer of ash and mud. This provides a unique view into the daily lives of the ancient population of Herculaneum. Walk around and awe at the treasures hidden by the mud and ash, you will have 2 hours of free time.
Your last shore excursion stop of the day is Mount Vesuvius, which is one of only two active volcanos in Europe and stands at a whopping 1281 meters (4,203 feet) tall. Venture to the top of Mount Vesuvius and take in the views, you will have approximately one hour and 30 minutes of free time. The last serious eruption of Mount Vesuvius was in March 1944 during the Second World War. However, there have not been any eruptions since Mount Vesuvius is still considered one of the most dangerous volcanos in the world mostly in part because of the large population living nearby.
At the end of your shore excursion day in Naples Italy, your driver will take you back to your Naples Cruise port. This adventure through time and history will surely be an experience of a lifetime.
