Founded in 1517, this cultural landmark is steeped in history. The port city of Le Havre is located at the mouth of the Seine in upper Normandy. Nearly destroyed during the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War, the city was devastated with over 5000 casualties, and nearly every building was demolished. One of the greatest architects of the time, August Perret, came to the rescue and rebuilt this city in such a way that it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The Place de l'Hotel de Ville is one of the most noted squares in all of Europe.
