You will meet your Juneau Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Adventure Excursion transfer guide in downtown Juneau and drive to the Mendenhall Valley, approximately 30 minutes away. Here, you will meet your canoe excursion guides for this very limited experience. Because of the close approach, this Juneau Canoe Shore Excursion makes to the Mendenhall glacier face, the U.S. Forest Service tightly controls the number of participants, and a U.S. Forest Service permit is required to do this.

Your Mendenhall Lake Canoe Shore Excursion guides will fit you out with life jackets before giving you a safety and canoe orientation. You will then board your 14 passengers' traditional Tlingit-style canoe, a very stable 28-foot watercraft, with all modern safety quality gear supplied. Setting out from shore, you will paddle across Mendenhall Lake toward the face of Mendenhall glacier. As you paddle, you will be navigating past small icebergs that have broken off the face of the glacier, while keeping your eyes peeled for Alaskan wildlife. Birds including arctic terns nest on the shoreline and eagles, goats, salmon, and bears are all common sights.

Based on weather and calving conditions on the day of your Juneau Glacier Canoe Excursion, your guide will maneuver your canoe within a safe distance of the massive, awe-inspiring face of the living Mendenhall Glacier. You may also have a short thrill ride by skirting the base of beautiful and mighty Nugget Falls.

A stop will be made to refuel with a complimentary snack of Alaskan-style reindeer sausage, salmon spread, cheese, crackers, and water. Once recharged, you will paddle back across Mendenhall Lake to the starting point of this shore excursion. From here, transportation will take you back to Juneau and your cruise ship terminal.

• Children must weigh at least 40 pounds in order to fit into required life jackets.

• We recommend wearing layers with the top layer being waterproof. The closer you get to the glacier, the cooler the air temperature. 
• Please wear sensible walking/hiking shoes that may get wet.
  
• We suggest you have cash on hand for refreshments, excursion staff gratuities, shopping, etc.

For the Juneau Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Adventure Excursion, you will meet your local canoe excursion guide right in the Juneau cruise pier area. All necessary details will be printed on your Electronic Shore Excursion Ticket.

Excursion Restrictions

• This excursion is not wheelchair accessible.
• Guests should be in moderate to good physical health.
• Children need to weigh at least 40lbs (18Kg).
• Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
• Children ages 13-17 must have a signed parental consent form to participate without a parent or guardian.
• Pregnant women up to 10 weeks should check with their doctor before booking this excursion. Women 10 weeks or over should not participate in this excursion.
• This Juneau Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Adventure Excursion may involve risks. We suggest you check with your elected person of choice to see if these possible risks might affect you.

Excursion FAQ

Cancellation

• Your ship arrives into port late and you cannot make it in time to the meeting location (we will verify with the tour operator).
• Your ship skips/misses the port.
• Weather conditions or equipment failure prevents the operator from running the excursion.
• A medical problem prevents you from safely participating in the excursion (we will verify with the excursion operator and the guest may send doctor's note). This applies to individuals only and not the remainder of the group.
  
• Cancellations/deposit refund requests that do not comply with the above may not be subject to refund.
