Come get away from the crowded cruise ship excursions to other Mayan ruins.
For this excursion, you'll need to take the free shuttle off the long cruise pier and meet your friendly, English-speaking guide at a convenient location in downtown Progreso.
Once you meet your guide and are comfortably onboard the air-conditioned transportation your day of exploring and sightseeing the Mayan Ruins will begin.
Along the short route, your certified, English-speaking guide will go over the plan for the day. They will provide you with an educational and informative excursion! If you have any questions, be sure to have them ready and your cameras handy. When you arrive at Dzibilchaltun, you will have the opportunity to see many of the structures and learn more about the Mayan culture.
Dzibilchaltun, pronounced "d-zeeble-chal-toon", are ruins situated just south of Progreso. The impressive ruins are lesser-known than Chacchoben so there are fewer crowds!
One of the most famous structures is the Temple of the Seven Dolls named for the seven small dolls found when archaeologists discovered the ruins in the 1950s. One of the unique features of the Temple is the position the Mayans constructed the building. The Temple is situated so that on the day of the Spring Equinox, the sun rises and shines directly through one temple window and out the other.
You will also have a chance to visit Xcalah cenote, a natural limestone sinkhole. The Xlacah cenote is located in the middle of the archaeological zone and is believed to have been the main freshwater source for the ancient Maya inhabitants of the city. The surface area of the pool is only part of a large water system that encompasses underground tunnels and a maximum depth of almost 150 feet. Please note that you are not able to swim in the cenote.
After your exploration of the ruins comes to an end, it's time to head to the local crafts market in Progreso. Browse the lovely handcraft open-air market where you can shop for that perfect, one-of-a-kind souvenir.
After you've enjoyed your time, your guide will take you back to your meeting point in downtown Progreso and hop on one of the free shuttles available to return to your Progreso cruise ship pier.
