Come along with us to explore the history and the beauty of the Summit with your small group and guide. You'll learn about the excitement of the gold rush and enjoy a spectacular view of the Tutsi River Canyon from an unbelievable Yukon Suspension Bridge and visit the Gold Rush Cemetery where many of those with the "gold fever" came to reside. Finally, you'll have the opportunity to see Lower Reid Falls, a lovely Alaskan waterfall with stunning views.
You'll start this adventure right near your Skagway cruise pier with a small group and a van that will seat either 8, or 10, depending upon group size. The van is the preferred method of travel as it can get up into the Chilkoot Mountains, named after the indigenous tribe that once inhabited the area, more easily. For your convenience, you will meet your guide and climb aboard the van right next to your cruise ship pier.
Then you're off for a one-hour (with scenic photo stops included) trip to the Summit a historical landmark of great beauty and unfortunate history. This is a mountain pass through the boundary range on the border of Alaska, U.S. A., and the province of British Columbia, Canada. It leads from Skagway to the chain of lakes at the headwaters of the Yukon, where gold was discovered back in 1896. You'll soon see a wonderland of impressive peaks, azure lakes, and stunted forests. The pace is relaxed and you will have ample time to enjoy the view with photo stops held at choice scenic locations.
From the summit, your group will drive 10 minutes to the Yukon Suspension Bridge, where you can venture out onto the 200' long bridge to get stunning views of the turbulent waters of the Tutshi River 57' below. There are parts that even had to be lowered by helicopter due to the severity of the landscape. While on the bridge you will learn more about the Gold Rush history and the natural history of the area. Walk along the boardwalk and immerse yourself in the miniature world of alpine wildflowers. The views from the visitor's center and the bridge are breathtaking...do not forget your camera!
Finally, this excursion will return to Skagway with an optional visit (time permitting) to the Gold Rush Cemetery and Lower Reid Falls. A short nature walk through the forest takes you to the base of Lower Reid Falls. The water drops over one hundred feet as it pours out of the forested granite mountainside above and offers spectacular photo opportunities. Return to your ship in Skagway having had an experience you won't forget. The drive back to your Skagway cruise pier is approximately 1 hour including the stops.
Please note: there are two departure times for this 3-hour excursion, both AM and PM.
