Break away from the cruise ship-sponsored excursion crowds of Skagway for some kayaking in a true naturalist's paradise - Haines, Alaska. This unique Skagway Kayak Cruise Excursion begins with a 45-minute catamaran ride along the steep-walled fjords, which connect Skagway to Haines. The scenery is constantly changing and there is always the potential for marine and wildlife sightings, so keep your eyes open and camera ready!
Upon arrival in Haines, you will meet your kayaking shore excursion guide and enjoy an approximately 30-minute seaside drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park has it all-important Tlingit cultural sites, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and a turquoise lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We will keep an eye out for wildlife; bald eagles, brown bear, and migratory birds that stop here seasonally.
Upon arrival at the lake, you will have a quick kayaking orientation and safety briefing, and take in the unique Alaska scenery while you board your 2 people, easy-rider sea kayak. If you do not have a partner, you will be matched up by the kayak shore excursion guide. Sea kayaking is easy to learn and your expert kayak guide will show you the basics of paddling. Outfitted with the proper gear, you will soon be gliding silently along the shores of Chilkoot Lake. This pristine lake is uncrowded and the scenery is spectacular. Huge waterfalls spill off the cliffs surrounding Chilkoot Lake, lush green forests crowd the shoreline, and wildlife abounds. Pause at the base of one of the waterfalls where your kayak excursion guide will reveal the secret workings of the rainforest. Beginning in July, sockeye salmon spawn in one of the clear streams that feed into the lake. Eagles and bears are often attracted to this spot, and you will be able to view all the activity from your kayak. The total time kayaking on this Skagway shore excursion is approximately 1.5 hours.
When time is up you will paddle back to shore and enjoy a box lunch before driving back to Haines. Once back in Haines, enjoy a guided driving sightseeing excursion of downtown Haines and historic Fort William H. Seward. Then, board the high-speed catamaran for your 45-minute journey back to Skagway. Return to your cruise ship filled with memories and photographs from an unforgettable kayak shore excursion adventure in Skagway Alaska!
