Many old religious and civic structures are beautifully renovated, while others retain the tumbledown charm, with fragments strewn about "park-like" grounds. Thanks to the dozens of Spanish-language schools that operate here, Antigua is a global hotspot you can't miss on your visit to Puerto Quetzal.

You will meet your professional, English-speaking guide outside your Puerto Quetzal cruise terminal where you will board the comfortable, air-conditioned transport for the scenic 90-minute drive to Antigua. As you journey through the forest, passing volcanoes and into the heart of the city, you will note the spectacular architecture dating back to the Spanish Baroque. The large fountain, circular walkways, and inviting benches of Parque Central welcome the buzz of locals and tourists alike. Pass by the twin bell towers of the 17th century Church of La Merced, adorned in graceful yellow and white, standing strong today.

The 16th-century Cathedral and Convent of Santo Domingo present a great opportunity to explore the past while experiencing the present in a museum and hotel. A visit to Jade Maya Museum and Factory will provide insight into the mining and creative process in the formation of fine traditional local jewelry. While you are there, don't forget to rub the jade rock formation in the middle of the showroom for good luck!

Lastly, you will enjoy a traditional Guatemalan lunch featuring fresh local fare. You will learn how the tortilla is made while learning the history and traditions behind the food. The knowledge gained will help you to make your lunch selection, choosing from mix pepian, chicken with loroco sauce, adobado de cerdo, jocon de pollo, or hilachas. Vegetarian options are available including enchiladas (not spicy), tortillas with cheese, and salad.

Where we meet

For this Puerto Quetzal Best of Antigua with Lunch Excursion, you will meet right outside the Puerto Quetzal cruise ship pier. All necessary details will be printed on your Electronic Shore Excursion Ticket.

• Your ship arrives into port late and you cannot make it in time to the meeting location (we will verify with the tour operator).
• Your ship skips/misses the port.
• Weather conditions or equipment failure prevents the operator from running the excursion.
• A medical problem prevents you from safely participating in the excursion (we will verify with the excursion operator and the guest may send doctor's note). This applies to individuals only and not the remainder of the group.
