Upon meeting your friendly staff at your Livorno transportation hub, your journey begins, winding your way through the stunning Tuscan countryside to the quaint town of Volterra. For groups of 5 to 8 participants, your driver will be your onboard guide giving the group commentary and interesting information along the way. For groups of 8 to 30, you will have a driver and a guide. Sit back and enjoy the scenic 1-hour drive. Once at Volterra, you will spend about 1.5 hours exploring medieval relics evoking the culture, history, and architecture of days gone by. Highlights include "Piazza dei Priori" and the clock tower (made famous by the blockbuster Twilight series) dating back to the 13th century, The Roman Theater rediscovered in the 1950s, the 2,500-year-old Etruscan wall (a section of which still stands), and the Pinacoteca Comunale, an art gallery and civic museum. Be sure to take notice of the beautiful alabaster treasures crafted by local artisans as you wind your way through this charming town.
You will continue your excursion to San Gimignano, which is approximately 40 minutes away. San Gimignano is a small walled town that dates back to the 3rd Century BC and Middle Ages. It is nestled in the hills of Siena, Tuscany. It is known as the Town of Fine Towers due to its famous medieval architecture and striking tower houses. San Gimignano, known for its distinctive towers, still has 14 of the original 76, making it a picturesque location for photography enthusiasts. You will capture the unique heritage and beauty of the region. You will also have the opportunity to stroll through the streets of this unique town and take in the sights. Upon arrival to the city, you will enjoy a delicious light lunch featuring locally produced bread, olive oil, cheese, olives, and ham at an authentic local farmhouse. You will also sample four delectable wines from a world-class vineyard. Before departing, you will have the opportunity to stock up on a few bottles.
At the end of your excursion, you will return to your Livorno transportation hub approximately 1 hour away, where you may continue to explore at your expense or return to the ship.
