Considered one of the most scenic drives in Hawaii, the curving Hana Highway delivers incredible vistas around every bend. The magical town of Hana lies at the end of the enchanted route.
Departing from your cruise pier in Kahului Maui, you will set off on a 68-mile (108km) journey along the scenic eastern coast of Maui to the charming little town of Hana. The road, first constructed with gravel, was finished in 1926. With more than 600 curves and 59 bridges, the journey takes approximately 2.5 hours each way. The drive is one to enjoy rather than speed through. Your driver/guide will tell you more about this area and its history as you drive along. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the lush landscape of this tropical world as it passes by outside your window. There will be a quick stop for a lite breakfast along the way.
Photo stops are usually made in both directions and traffic at the stops will dictate in which order they are seen. Some of these stops may include Hookipa Beach Park, where the best professional windsurfers come to challenge Mother Nature and the waves of up to 25' in the winter months.
You will make a photo stop at Kaumahina State Wayside Park with scenic views of the rugged coastline and the lush tropical rainforest. Your vehicle will pass through Puaa Kaa Wayside State Park with its breathing views of waterfalls and glistening pools.
Enjoy an amazing view from Keanae Lookout, one of the most famous spots on the road to Hana. Take in the black lava fields and maybe even sample the local banana bread. Dating from the 1800s, it is one of the last coastal enclaves of native Hawaiians. They still grow patches of taro, which they pound into poi, a staple of the old Hawaiian diet.
See views of Kailua Falls, the most impressive waterfall along the route. The 122 acre (49 hectares) Waianapanapa State Park, is home to a beautiful black sand beach where you might spot Hawaiian sea turtles. Have your camera ready, as there is a waterfall or beautiful panorama around almost every curve.
Do not overlook the town of Hana. Your guide will lead you on a walking orientation of Hana Town for approximately 15 minutes before you are given some free time to explore this sleepy, rural village.
Enjoy seeing Palikea Stream, the largest perennial stream on Maui. You will also see Waikani Falls also known as "3 Bears Falls" with its 3 parallel waterfalls that drop 1,000 feet! There will be a quick stop at Charles Lindbergh's grave sight. In 1927, he became the first person to make a non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Along the route, you will also have lunch. Depending on time and the schedule, this will either be in Wainapanapa State Park or Hana Bay Pavilion. (please see Notes section). The return to your Kahului Maui cruise pier follows the same highway back.
Please note: The road to Hana is a winding road with numerous curves and bumps. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should not participate. Heavy traffic is to be expected and all times are approximate. There may be road closures for repairs that could alter the exact route.
