Upon arrival in Haines, you will meet your kayak cruise excursion guide at the cruise pier and set out along the Lutak Inlet on a drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. The drive is very scenic: on one side, you have glacier-clad mountains scraping the sky, and splashes of colorful wildflowers along the road. On the other side, you have the Lutak Inlet, which is home to many types of marine life.

This park has it all-important Tlingit cultural sites, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and a turquoise lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We will keep an eye out for wildlife; bald eagles, brown bear, and migratory birds that stop here seasonally.

Upon arrival at the lake, you will have a quick kayaking orientation and safety briefing and take in the scenery while you board your 2 people, easy-rider sea kayak. Sea kayaking is easy to learn and your expert excursion guide will show you the basics of paddling. Outfitted with the proper gear, you will soon be gliding silently along the shores of Chilkoot lake. This pristine lake is uncrowded and the scenery is spectacular. Huge waterfalls spill off the cliffs surrounding the lake, lush green forests crowd the shoreline, and wildlife abounds. Pause at the base of one of these waterfalls where your kayak cruise excursion guide will reveal the secret workings of the rainforest. Beginning in July, sockeye salmon spawn in one of the clear streams that feed into the lake. Eagles and bears are often attracted to this spot, and you will be able to view all the activity from your kayak.

Excursion Restrictions

• The minimum participation age is 7 years old and must weigh at least 40lbs (18Kg).
• The maximum weight to fit in the kayak is 250lbs (113Kg). The maximum height is 6'7" (200cm).
• This excursion is not wheelchair accessible.
• There is walking over uneven terrain and slopes to reach the lake.
• Full arm and leg mobility is required to board/operate the kayak.
• Pregnant women up to 10 weeks should check with their doctor before booking this excursion. Pregnant women 10 weeks or more should not participate.

Excursion FAQ

Cancellation

• Your ship arrives into port late and you cannot make it in time to the meeting location (we will verify with the tour operator).
• Your ship skips/misses the port.
• Weather conditions or equipment failure prevents the operator from running the excursion.
• A medical problem prevents you from safely participating in the excursion (we will verify with the excursion operator and the guest may send doctor's note). This applies to individuals only and not the remainder of the group.
  
• Cancellations/deposit refund requests that do not comply with the above may not be subject to refund.
